How to ruin a world-class golf course. The layouts at Treetops are world class, with beautiful scenery, challenging layouts, hills, fast greens, deep sand traps, and well maintained. Its expensive, but should be worth the price. However.... 1. Lodging. Don't stay there, if you want to get a night's sleep. With the paper-thin walls you can hear the people partying in the adjoining rooms (and upstairs). If you like to stay up until 3:00am, then no problem. If you plan on sleeping? Stay elsewhere. 2. Pace of play. S--L--O--W! We did see a ranger on the front nine, although I had to wait because he was driving up the cart path towards me while I was ready to hit. And we did see him once on the back nine asking if we had found a head cover for a driver. But he did nothing about the 20+ minute waits on the tee box. And he did nothing about the people who have absolutely no sense of golf etiquette... 3. They host a lot of outings, and people are there to have fun. But there is no need to have people constantly yelling and whooping so loudly that they disturb other golfers. Of course, they get quiet when they are teeing off. It seems that several groups thought they were the only ones on the course, and could do anything they wanted. The ranger never did a thing to at least keep it down to a dull roar. Bad. 4. Even worse, while we had to wait and wait and wait on the group in front of us, the people behind us hit their balls up into our group. And they played a radio, loudly, even when we were teeing off. The ranger couldn't be bothered to do anything about them. Bottom line: if you are there for a wild drunken party with screaming and doing anything you want while blasting your radio, then this is your place! If you're looking for a nice round of golf in a beautiful course, this place is not for you. If you believe in golf etiquette, this place is not for you. If you like peace and quiet, this place is not for you. In total, they completely ruined what should have been a wonderful round of golf. They have once of the nicest layouts imaginable.... and run it so poorly that not only will I never come back again, I STRONGLY URGE EVERYONE NOT TO PLAY THIS COURSE!!! Maybe if people start going elsewhere, they will change their ways. They have completely ruined this place, unless you're a part of a wild drinking party. Completely unacceptable.

The bar area had lovely, attentive staff that impressed our group with their excellent customer service. The food was wonderful and they had a large Michigan craft beer selection. That being said, our room accommodations left much to be desired. The staff happily upgraded us to a larger room for the same rate, much to our delight. The room was large but the furniture in the room was old and in need of replacement. The low rating is due in large part to the state of the bed. The bed was flat and uncomfortable, no amount of pillows or extra blankets helped. An uncomfortable nights sleep awaits you should you choose to stay.

We got the groupon deal for lift passes and overnight accommodations. It was very easy making reservations just a week before arrival. Our two night stay was excellent! We arrived before the checkin time at around 1:30 and our room was unexpectedly ready. All our calls to the front desk was answered by more than helpful staff. The slopes were icy both days we snowboarded but that was expected for December snowboarding in Michigan. We were still able to get in a lot of rides and I had a blast teaching my girlfriend how to snowboard. The beginner slopes were family friendly and I had an awesome time falling on my face while attempting the bigger jumps. Free coffee and tea was a pleasant surprise. A warm hot tub after a day on the hill was the cherry on top. Also their double beds fit two people comfortably, but their blankets were as thin as paper.

This review is for the hotel/rooms only. I was here for a work meeting so I did not use the golf course/spa/etc. The best way to describe this place is an adult frat house. Lots of dudes on golf trips. The rooms were disgusting...black toilet, black tub, hair dryer on the wall from the 70s, stains on the couch, nasty bedspreads, hard beds. I cannot believe I stayed here, but it was too late to change. The meeting room we used was in the basement of the main building, where you don't get cell phone service. Awesome. The only saving grace was that the restaurant had decent food and service.

Staff wanted us to open our luggage for inspection upon arrival LOL. Apparently being younger than 35 is cause for the staff to treat you like children. Having skied Lake Louise the previous weekend and enjoyed the hospitality of their world class hotels/resorts, and by the general demeanor of the TreeTops staff I almost just went straight back home that night. I should have. What a dump. Security was all over us for having glass in the hot tub but never mind the skating rink you had to traverse to get to the hot tub. Multiple people felt and busted their heads, but glassware was the real problem. Security staff and front desk staff was antagonistic in trying to ensure total compliance with a long list of over the top "rules". Is this supposed to be a resort or a prison? Lastly - place is outdated, beds are terrible, ski "hill" is a joke. Spend the extra bucks to keep driving to Tremblant. lol these guys are suing because of damage to their "reputation" after the Jan. 2015 frat parties. Don't worry, I have already been telling people to avoid your dump since 2013. It just took me a couple years to let it rip on Yelp.

This is probably the most mis-managed golf course(s) i've had the pleasure to play at...besides having tee times stacked upon each other, it was a gross mis management of golf. 12 minutes pace of play does not hold water here, you better hit and run because guaranteed the next foursome will be on your ass!!!

Stayed here for 4 nights during the summer of 2008. Played all of the golf courses, and had a great time. Wife used the spa, which was very small, considering the quality of the golf. Comparing the price for the quality of golf, it was a bargain. The restaurants were good, but we normally drove into Gaylord and dined there. The room was wonderful. We upgraded to a hot tub room, and it was HUGE. The price difference wasn't that much different, so bee sure to check. I've reviewed most of the golf courses, so if interested, visit danperry.com/wordpress/g… I'd definitely recommend to a true golfer.

5 stars for the golf course and service but 1 star for most everything else. The rooms are big but the a/c doesn't work in any of the rooms, the beds are like a bouncy house, the pillows are way too firm, the carpet is dirty and worn, almost every wood surface outside is weathered to the point of rotting, the balconies are rotting too because they are not sealed/painted/treated properly, their vehicles are all rusted out, their roads are falling apart. I could go on but I will leave it there. However, the bars/restaurants are pretty good, but way way way understaffed. I was there for a 4day conference with about 150 people. I don't think they were prepared for that many people. The best thing about the place besides the amazing golf was the staff. They were very very nice and helpful. Really good! If management hired just one more multi-trade person to spend all day everyday cleaning/fixing/repairing things I think the place would be in much better shape. The way it is going they are going to end up spending $2 million to fix everything in the next 5 years. I skied here some time ago and loved it. Didn't stay here though.

Played RTJ Sr Masterpiece golf course at TreeTops Resort. HOLY HELL what a beautiful beast. I can see why he describes it as his masterpiece. It's a great layout from beginning to end. So many memorable holes to describe. The weather stunk but the scenery made up for it. If your looking for a super challenging course and unbelievable scenery this is the place.

My family and I stayed here on our way up to Mackinaw island, looking to make a quick stop at a hotel for the night. Looking back, it would have been better to stay at the semi-dangerous looking motel we saw a couple miles back. The entire place smelled an old - folks home, drunk golfers ambled through the halls, and surprise fees at the end of registration ratcheted the price up to almost $200, compared to the $139 we were expecting. The bedspreads were stained, the iron was defective, and the doors were flimsy enough to make me fear for my life in the case of a drunken golfer stumbling about looking for his room. Though there were cups beside the sink, I was too afraid to drink any of the water, and slept on two towels instead of the bedspread. I wish I would have read the reviews before staying here and just gone to the Holiday Inn a ways back -- at least there I wouldn't have been scared to sleep. I would recommend this to golfers who will be too plastered by the end of the day to notice the horrid conditions of the rooms. But if you're looking to crash for a night or stay for non - golf related reasons, find somewhere else.

This review based solely on golf. I played the Rick Smith Signature the weekend of 9/20/14. I picked this one because Rick Smith did Arcadia, which I like. So, I was curious to play this one as well. For the price and the scenery - definitely worth it. There are a ton of really breathtaking holes. My only two beefs are (I) some of the greens and (ii) some difficulty getting off of the tees for less than stellar golfers. For the greens, like Arcadia, there are some too wild undulations. The greens were not lightning fast, but if you got on the wrong side of some slopes, you were looking at a three putt. For the first shot issues - we were playing with some high handicap guys who must have lost about 10 balls apiece. And, usually off of the tee. All in all, great course though.

Old hotel rooms with beds that creak and moan. Musty smell and small bathrooms that give you a nice mixture of burning hot and freezing cold water, without touching the dial! Not a fan of the staff shoveling the walkway outside your personal sliding glass door at 5:45 am on a Sunday. The thing that did me in was the paper thin walls where there were kids running and screaming down the hall all night in addition to the drunk who was basically trying to kick down our door at 3 am because he thought it was his room. Restaurant's were OK, with the sports bar being my choice despite it being overrun with screaming kids too. Great beer specials but lousy food. Not much of a crowd at the other two restaurants, with the one all the way to the left (if you're standing out front) literally having two tables at 9 pm on a Saturday night. Even though it was winter, I was shocked to find out that all but one of the golf courses were located almost a couple miles away from the actual lodging. Once you leave the property, there is not much to do in the town either. Staff was very nice, but other than that it was a long two day, one-night stay.

Played all four 18 hole golf courses along with Threetops twice and thoroughly enjoyed the golf. Breathtaking views on many holes, fairways in good condition, and greens that rolled beautifully and consistently across all courses. Some bunkers could use attention. But all said and done, phenomenal golf courses on beautiful property. Great views, challenging holes - pure northern Michigan golf. Other noteworthy items: + Friendly and accommodating staff throughout + Sports bar at south property had good food at reasonable prices + Dining area on north complex good for a quick bite between rounds + Wildlife abounds, turkeys, deer, birds - cool - The Lodge was pretty disappointing. Air conditioner couldn't keep up, toilet lacked pressure. Felt a little dated. Accommodations aside, I look forward to going back.

Beautiful golfing but I wouldn't stay overnight there again unless the place undergoes some extensive renovations. Noisy, dated and dirty. Couldn't wait to get back to my own bed.

If they would only put some money into updating a few areas, this would have gotten 4 stars. We stayed in the lodge rather than the inn (which looks like it is in major need of renovation). The bathroom furnishings in our room looked like grandma's old house (puke green tub with rusted and worn trim and those big clear gem-like oval balls for the sink's water faucet knobs). The towel rack broke. The A/C works well, but is pretty rusty and old looking. The rest of the room was nicely furnished though. The reason why this place is A-OK is the value you get for your dollar...if you are a golfer who plans to play a lot while you're here. For $169/person in July, you get accommodations with a tasty breakfast and unlimited golf. Golf course was in pretty good shape, and their property captures the beauty of northern Michigan. Pleasant staff throughout the resort.

I stayed here as part of a wedding party. Frankly, I was not overly impressed. We arrived on a Friday afternoon for the evening's rehearsal dinner at 5:00. We were told upon arrival that check-in was not the typical 3:00, but 4:00... but by the time we were actually handed a key, it was 4:45 and we were not the only ones waiting. Others waiting included the groom's mother, who had been waiting since 1:00. Needless to say, we were late to the rehearsal. We stayed at the Inn instead of the Lodge, which was exactly what you paid for. Small TV, no extras, could NOT find an ice machine, staff desk was unmanned, wood paneling circa 1970, etc. We used hair/makeup services at the spa. Makeup was good; hair was ok. Couldn't find a drop of coffee in either (Inn or Lodge) of the lobbies' communal coffee pots on Sunday morning, despite asking staff for more... although the coffee was delicious when I had it Saturday! Although the accommodations were less than ideal, the ceremony and the reception itself were perfect. The ceremony was set up on the golf course exactly as requested, the Oak Room at the Lodge was beautiful, the food was some of the best I've ever had at a wedding, and the planner was very competent.

We recently stayed at the Inn at Treetops for a convention. We knew the Inn wasn't as fancy as the main Lodge (which has hot tubs in the rooms), but we were really surprised at how run-down and frankly, grungy this building and its rooms were. It's comparable to a Motel 6 (or other 1 star hotel) - not very clean and looks like it hasn't been updated since 1960. The coffee cups were dirty, the tub floor was yellow/brown, one of our chairs was covered in brown and white stains, the underside of our bedspread was covered in stains, the iron didn't work, and the sheets were paper thin. Odd (but harmless) aspects of our room: the large armoire contained a little ~14" TV that was really hard to see from the beds, one of the chairs was pushed against the back door as a safety precaution, and there was no information in the room about the lodge, numerous on-site restaurants, or other local information. The only redeeming aspect was that our room was quite large. Unless you're super into golfing, I would not recommend making a trip out here!

Played the Jones course today in the rain. Carts had no windshields or awnings to go over the clubs. No GPS (not a big deal) or pin placement info, which would have been most helpful. Bunkers were either full of rocks or had so much soft new sand that your feet sank in at least 8". Probably the 4th time up here in the last 20 years and it's really sad to see the Inn so run down with small old TVs so bad you can't read the graphics.. They've got a lot of work to do.

I didn`t stay here but rented a snowmobile. They are overpriced compared the other places but I was on a busy weekend so I had to rent from them. They did a wrong transaction on my credit card so my $800 deposit was on hold for 7 days. It is impossible to reach them by phone. They didn`t reply me until I wrote them that I will take legal action. Then they just blamed other people for their mistake. Stay away from their front desk. Don`t rent anything.

We stayed over the past weekend at the Inn. For the price, it was not bad...I agree that it could use some updating but if you're looking for an affordable ski getaway, this is it. We used a groupon the first night and paid full price the 2nd and 3rd night. The food at Legends and Hunter Grille was exceptional. The drink prices left me cringing, but if you bring your own, the room size and wet bar can accomodate bringing your own beverages and food. The pool and spa was nice, especially after skiing and tubing. Definitely do the tubing! We had a blast and the entertainment at Hunter Grille (Jeff and Sue) was awesome especially Friday when it's Ladies night, martini's 1/2 off and buy 2 get third Tapas free. Good times were had by all.

5 outstanding golf courses. Gaylord, MI is America's golf mecca, with more great courses per capita than anywhere else, including Myrytle Beach. Treetops has best set of coureses within the Mecca (the Gaylord Golf Mecca is a joint marketing venture that allows visitors access across numerous local golf resorts). The Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Masterpiece, like all Treetops courses with the exception of the Tradition, has spectacular views. Its slope rating of 144 is the 7th toughest in the state. However, it's very playable if you are smart off the tee, par is protected with a lot of uneven lies if you don't place your tee shop smartly. The Tom Fazio Premier course is the only Fazio-designed course in the state. The Premier features a lot of strategic approach shots and Fazio's famous bowl-shaped fairways, which make for more forgiving tee shots. Par is protected with elevated greens and tucked pins behind semi-penal sand and grass bunkers. The Rick Smith designed Signature course is a "let it rip" course, with wide fairways. There is only one Par 4 or 5 where I don't hit driver. Par is protected by giant undulating greens surrounded by tight lies. Only the best will walk-off this course without a 3 putt or two, however it's tough to lose a ball off the tee on this course. Some of the views on the Smith are reminiscent of the Hendersonville, NC area as it winds through the Sturgeon River valley, one of six oustanding river systems that each begin in or very near Gaylord. My favorite course, though without the views, is the Rick Smith Tradition course. The Tradition is Treetops' only walking course, it's easy to get a tee time and it features a lot of memorable holes. I especially love its short par 4 #13, which requires a smart tee shot and a very precise pitch shot into the green. The Tradition features the best greens in Northern Michigan and hosts a number of junior golf tournaments. The most famous course at Treetops is the 9 hole par 3 Threetops course. Only Augusta National's par 3 course is more well-known. This course is a great warm-up for the 18 hole courses given its requirement you correctly calculate yardages given large elevation changes and a near-constan breeze/wind. This course has featured golf's greatest players in a silly season event in late-June that's broadcast by ESPN. Lee Trevino made a hole-in-one during one event and Fred Couple's is always challenging the other three golfers for 1st.
